Be Prepared

Chris Aerfeldt’s compelling paintings strike a hidden chord – what you see is what you don’t get.
Her paintings home in on the fake promises, the yearning, the anxious wait, the hidden desires and the surface rituals of daily life – it’s all there.

Associate Professor Ken Wach

There is growing tension in the air; a financial crisis munching its way from the edges to the innards of Europe and far beyond. Apocalyptic predictions of the ‘end of the world as we know it’. How to prepare? I have been reading about survival and self-reliance; thinking of stocking up on food supplies, torches, candles, lighters… and feeling powerless, except for in my paintings.

As an antidote, a bit like whistling in the dark, I have invented playful strategies to counteract potential ‘doom-and-gloom’ scenarios. A silver heart necklace doubles as armour, a retro-style telephone is adapted for outdoor communication, new sources of lighting are proposed, and kitchenware is transformed into weapons for self-defense.
