Family Scenes

Childhood is often thought of as a time of idyllic innocence, fun and freedom, however happy images often mask harsher realities. The ‘Family Scene’ paintings and digital images combine old Estonian family photos, postcards and china figurines from my mother’s collection, to explore themes involving family, childhood and identity.

The sub-conscious, dreams and psychological states all provide starting points for these works. In these rich, colour-saturated paintings a dream or trance-like world is evoked, reminiscent of the uncertainty and moodiness of a David Lynch movie or the drama of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and the 18th century Romantic artists.

A giant figurine or doll-like character appears in front of a landscape background. Saccharine sweet (‘The Sound of Music’) meets something slightly menacing (Hansel and Gretl’s scary day in the forest). There is something ‘not-quite-right’ brewing below the picturesque surface. The grass too green; the cheeks too rosy.

These are images conjured in the psychology of the mind – reflections of the inner world, encompassing persistent emotions that surmount logic.
